Kpop in Public is a challenge about dancing to Kpop songs in public. Often, such videos are also "One Take" - that is, filmed continuously with no cuts or edits.

History

Perhaps the first incidence of this challenge was Jellybeannose with Dancing to K-Pop in Public (15,000 Subscribers Celebration!) in 2010.[1]

I don't know who exactly started it but it became a trend a few years ago. The fascination back then was that the "people in public" dont know K-Pop and gave the dancers weird looks or cheered them on. By now the term "K-Pop in Public" is thrown around everywhere. It takes away the joke when you are a well known huge dance formation performing in the streets of Thailand with prior announcement.

With Idols

Some K-Pop idols have joined and danced alongside fans in public, whenever meeting by coincidence, or as part of an elaborate planned prank.

Examples include:

  • ATEEZ - Wonderland by cover group SEOULA - Likely the most famous. San from ATEEZ goes undercover dressed as an 83 year-old man, with a walking stick. To the confusion of fans, interrupts a public performance by falling over. Then reveals his identity by joining the fans in the middle of the dance cover.
  • GoToe's Random Play Dance - In New York, fans organised a random play dance in public. By complete coincidence, NCT 127 was on their US tour and was in the same area so joined in.
  • ZEROBASEONE - In Bloom - In Belgium, a fan was performing a K-Pop in Public cover. One of the members of the group, Zhang Hao, was actually nearby. He ran over to join and surprise the fan.
  • NMIXX Pranks Fans in LA - A group of fans were told they were being filmed for a "K-Pop documentary", but in the middle of an all-male dance cover for the song "O.O' they were interrupted by NMIXX, and preformed the full song together.
