Reactions and Reviews

1992

I usually have trouble with stories that have long passages of time between brief scenes, but this had such a warm, cozy aura about it that I didn't mind. It was a Patricia posits that the post-V'ger shakedown cruise is a time of conflict between Kirk and Spock. The jealousy and lack of communication between then are not edifying. They also must deal with an extremely ugly culture that is a cross between an outlaw band and a fundamentalist cult. The whole plot is altogether unpleasant. I aiso wonder how Kirk and Spock could have been so stupid as to have sex when they knew they were being pursued by those plug-uglies. This led to believe that the observation of one of the characters that "Jim rhymes with dim" was very apt. [1]

Very unusual story. Excellent writing: vivid descriptions, especially of nature. The state of the interrupted relationship is interesting; they are estranged and Spock is pissed. A satisfyingly difficult thing they have to work out. The first sex scene rather shockingly sudden, surprising beautiful. But I can't say I enjoyed reading this. Too much unredeemed ugliness. I quite disliked Bill and Candy: was bothered by Kirk's cold attitude toward Spock: hated the ignorant-evil natives. I think maybe there was just too much, too continuous travail, more than necessary conflict. I love adventure but not such constant difficulty, I can't quite figure out if this feels like a very Star-Trek scenario, or very much not. An excellent drawing of the native "culture," but perhaps not enough of Kirk and Spock together. I would rather it hadn't ended in native's POV. [2]
