Kingdoms&Keyblades is a zine for Kingdom Hearts, where the characters from the games are portrayed as Dungeons and Dragons classes.

About

Interest check for a Kingdom Hearts and D&D zine opened on February 29, 2020[1]. During this time, the zine's social media account hosted a poll on Twitter to decide on the zine's name, to which a majority of votes went to "Kingdoms & Keyblades"[2]. Interest checks closed on May 15, 2020[3].

Contributor applications for artists, writers, and merch artists opened on March 15, 2020[4]. In response to the swirling concerns that too many Kingdom Hearts zine projects were running at the same time, the zine's Twitter account posted a poll asking followers when would be the best time to open preorders, to which a majority voted that the zine should come out later in the year[5]. Applications closed on April 13, 2020[6]. Acceptance emails were sent out by April 17th[7].

The zine opened shop for preorders on August 15, 2020, with the following pricing tiers[8]:

  • Bag of Beans ($15 USD) - Digital Zine
  • Bag of Tricks ($20-25 USD) - Digital or Physical Zine, Prints, Sticker Sheet
  • Bag of Devouring ($45-50 USD) - Digital or Physical Zine, Prints, Sticker Sheet, Acrylic Charms
  • Merch Bundles ($10-50 USD)
  • Bag of Holding ($60 USD) - Digital Zine, Physical Zine, Prints, Sticker Sheet, Acrylic Charms, Acrylic Standee

On August 25th, the zine store unveiled a new bundle, a merch-only bundle with a limited ten sets of Kingdom-Hearts-themed die[9]. The die sets sold out on the same day. A giveway for two sets of dice was organized from October 12 to the end of preorders[10]. The winners of the giveaway was Twitter user critsareforkids and Tumblr user quoththecrow[11][12].

Preorders were closed on October 31, 2020[13]. Digital versions of the zine was sent out soon after on November 2, 2020[14]. Shipping of physical products that did not include dice began approximately after December 18, 2020[15]. Orders with the die sets were put on hold as the dice had been yet to be made. Another update on January 23, 2021, reported that the project's dice maker had experienced bad luck and still could not produce the dice[16]. A new update on April 5, 2021, announced that the dice maker was in a better state and work on the dice was happening, with estimates that the products would be shipped by May 2021[17].

Second sales began on February 14, 2021[18]. The zine's shop was officially closed on August 4, 2021[19].

By now, the dice had yet to be made, although an update on September 16th reassured buyers that they were a work in progress[20]. Delays continued on an update on November 30, 2021, as the zine's social media account reported that the dice maker was undergoing personal problems[21]. Due to these circumstances, the zine's mods choes to send the bundles without the dice as soon as possible and send the dice at a later date.
