Julius Unger was a member of First Fandom and a founding member of The Scienceers, the first-ever fan club. He published the zine Fantasy Fiction Field, for which he won a medal for Best News-Weekly at Denvention I. With Bob Tucker, Jane Tucker, Damon Knight and Harry Warner, Jr., he also published the 1939 Yearbook of Science Fiction, and handled the 1941 edition on his own.

Unger gafiated for some time, but eventually returned to publish a revival of Fantasy Fiction Field in 1963. However, he died of a heart attack on the first day the revival was printed.
