Journey to the West is a novel originally published in China and attributed to Wu Cheng'en in the late 16th century (Ming Dynasty). It is inspired by the real-like account of Xuanzang, a 7th century Buddhist monk who journeyed to India to retrieve sacred sutras or scrolls. The story has 100 chapters, telling of the adventures of Tang Sanzang, the monk as he travels with his companions Sun Wukong (The Monkey King), Zhu Bajie (Pigsy), Sha Wujing (Sand Monk or Sandy) and Bai Long Ma (White Dragon Horse) as they journey from China to India to find sacred scriptures. It is probably on the best known works of literature in China and inspired numerous other works.
