Discussion and meta
Although fans appreciate the story and characters, these elements aren't the main focus of this fandom as they are in other fandoms. The JSR fandom is largely focused on the visual aesthetic, music, genres, and subcultures presented in the games.
- cyberpunk
- "cassette futurism"
- "hip-hop futurism"
- parkour subculture
- skateboarding subculture
- street fashion
- youth subculture
The thing with JSR is I'm sure most people like it because of the art direction rather then just the gameplay. It's one of the first cell-shaded games and has such a great soundtrack that it still looks nice today. The first game is more arcade-y while the second game is a little bit more open[1]
Fan activity and communities
JSR fans are also known as "Rudies", named after the in-game members of the local youth culture factions.
Fans essentially consider the game Bomb Rush Cyberfunk to be part of the JSR series in all aspects except official designation. While many games take inspiration from other games, BRC is blatantly derivative of JSR in visuals, music, and gameplay.
Fan activity often includes sharing unrelated media and original projects with aesthetics shared with or inspired by JSR.
