Reactions and Reviews

In this short story SG-1 are taking shelter in a hut waiting for a downpour to stop so they can return home. The conversation starts with Daniel's theory about the local leader and then drifts into something more daring as Jack obviously gets bored with the scientific direction the discussion is heading in. Jack then asks the team to describe their kinkiest date. Before anyone gets confused by the rating on this story, Jack quickly qualifies his challenge with, "You know Teal'c, kinky, weird, bizarre, strange, peculiar, that sort of date." Jack and Daniel are the only ones to participate; Teal'c insists that he has no experience of such matters, and Sam wisely opts not to share her own past.

I like the style of the piece. The writing is light-hearted, the characters are easily recognisable and each acts in the way you would expect. It's an interesting look at the mundanity of everyday gate travel: Jack sees no point in the team getting wet if they don't have to; Daniel can't seem to get through to the local people in order to move ahead with diplomacy. Sometimes things don't work out as planned, and I was interested to see the team relaxing as they wait for the rain to stop, not all that concerned by their lack of progress.

There are a couple of things that bothered me. There were too many instances of words being used that are similar to the one required but incorrect: let's instead of lets; brought instead of bought; statement instead of state. Commas were overused throughout, although considering that's a problem I suffer from myself, the less said about that the better...

Overall, this is a charming story, giving a little bit of both Jack and Daniel's history. We learn things about both men from their experiences, and I liked the way Jack manages to surprise Daniel with his knowledge early on. I'm not usually one for humorous stories, but despite I found this to be gently funny. I would recommend the story to anyone who wants to see the team simply enjoying each other's company.[1]
