A horcrux in the Harry Potter series is a cursed object that helps a wizard or a witch attain immortality. It was introduced in the later part of the seven book series.
In Half-Blood Prince, Horace Slughorn defines a horcrux as “an object in which a person has concealed part of their soul”, then goes on to explain that in order to split one’s soul, someone has to commit murder, “the supreme act of evil”.[1] Voldemort made several of these, and destroying them was key to his defeat in canon.
Horcruxes naturally did not appear in fanfiction written before the release of the sixth Harry Potter book, and some later stories explicitly mention "no horcruxes" in their description.[2]
Some fics feature alternative horcruxes. In Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, for example, Voldemort turned the Voyager spacecraft plaque into a horcrux.
