Reactions and Reviews
The first time I read this story, I really liked it.The second time I read this story, I thought the dead almost-wife was awfully Mary Sue-ish, even though she's dead for virtually the entire story.
The third time I read this story, I thought that the dead almost-wife wasn't all that Mary Sue-ish at all, but damn do the boys cry. A lot.
Then I thought about the fact that I read this story three times and I'll probably read it again. Clearly it's made an impression.
Home starts with a whirlwind bit of exposition that wraps up all the pesky post-series details, gets Jim to the alter, and then kills off his would-be bride by a vengeful criminal, all within the first couple of pages. After a five year absence, Jim returns to town, moves back into the loft, and he and Blair promptly fall into angst (intermixed with a few welcome home parties).
First the bad: the boys do cry. A *lot*. And a good beta would have helped, because while there aren't many mistakes, the mistakes that did squeak through are jarring. On the other hand, the writing is mostly quite good, and while Penny (the dead almost-wife) should have been fleshed out a bit to make her a bit more likeable, at least we didn't have to suffer through 100 KB of a courtship to an original character. Besides, the angst is delicious (for those who don't mind a bit of melodrama) and the first-time issues are many and varied. A good guilty-pleasure read for those looking for Jim (as opposed to Blair) playing the prodigal son.[1]
