Reactions and Reviews

Julie brings out well what I find the EMH's best quality as a character--he can be damn funny. I thought that the author really nailed the Doctor's voice right in the beginning in his log. I had to chuckle at his reference to Paris as his beta and the later reference to feedback. I like how this isn't just a reprise of "Author, Author" though the canonical portions are handled very well and nicely fleshed out. I liked the whole side bit about cleaning the carpets The aliens Voyager had to negotiate with and the problem they encountered with were interesting and original. And I LOVED how the Doctor's holonovel figured in resolving things--though not before some complications. Like the best of the virtual season stories, "Hero for the Times" ably blends a solid action-adventure plot, with interesting interactions among the characters and this one had plenty of humor as well. This is one of my favorite stories of the year. Julie does a great job with the EMH, but what really grabs me are her aliens - they are so very alien, and yet so very plausible. And her sly humor comes through. Captain and Tineel, indeed! [2]

I enjoy all of Julie's stories because she gets the characters just right and she has such an eye for detail and description. This story is no exception. This is possibly one of the best Doctor-centric stories I've ever read. Great job, Julie! [3]

This story packs quite a wallop, both as a serious story with a fascinating new alien species, as well as a laugh-a-minute humorfest. [4]
