Accusations of Copyright Infringement

On October 30, 2018, while the zine was still in development, the zine's mods claimed to have received an email from someone calling themselves "Mystic Messenger Spill Tea" accusing the zine's staff of moving on with the project despite having their proposal rejected by Cheritz, the developer of Mystic Messenger, and receiving a cease and desist letter. The email was accompanied by a screenshot of what seems to be one of the mods despairing on Discord that Cheritz refused their zine proposal and an image of a poorly-written C&D made from an online template. In response, the mods posted a rebuttal on the zine's Tumblr, including screenshots from their email correspondence with Cheritz showing that they had received full approval on all aspects of the zine. The post also notes that the zine blog and individual staff members' blogs had been receiving harassment for a week leading up to the email.[1]

Neither the screen-cap or letter are genuine. It is easy to fake conversations in Discord by changing the avatars and screen names. The letter from the (conveniently) unspecified/redacted law firm is unprofessionally written and formatted. In fact, after doing some quick research we discovered the template for that letter came from here: http://templatelab.com/cease-and-desist/

It is also worth noting that within the last week several mods have received violent threats on their personal blogs and the zine blog itself has had 24 graphic images (gore/blood/etc.) submitted to it. We suspect these incidents are likely related.

We cannot fathom why anyone would feel the need to attempt this scale of slander over a charity project, but we refuse to be intimidated or sidetracked. Legal action WILL be pursued in the event this situation escalates, but as of now, the zine will go forward as planned.[1]
