Hearts for the Holidays is a series of zines to celebrate the holiday season with Kingdom Hearts charcters. The zine followed the format of an advent calendar, sending fanart and fanfiction incrementally to subscribers from the beginning of December to Christmas Day.

2019

The zine was first announced on August 31, 2019, followed by an open call for feedback to gauge general interest in such a project[1]. Over 60 applications were reported to have been submitted[2].

The zine was designed to be a free, daily, advent-calender-style subscription, with in-kind donations going to ExtraLife[3]. Applications for the zine opened from September 12th to October 4th[4]. Fans would receive a picture or short story every day from beginning of December counting down to December 25th[5].

The zine was originally scheduled to open Gumroad subscriptions on November 20, 2019, but was pushed forward to November 22nd[6]. By November 25th, the project reached 100 subscribers and raised almost $200 USD for charity. The last day to subscribe and receive all the contributions was November 31, 2019[7].

After the zine was finished on December 25, 2019, all submissions were compiled into a single piece to be downloaded for free on Gumroad[8]. By the end of the project, the zine received 227 subscribers and raised $350 USD total to be donated to ExtraLife[9].

2020

The zine returned for a second time with an interest form on September 8, 2020, to be closed on September 15th[11]. With the fans blessings to continue again, the project posted their preliminary schedule on September 14th.[12]. Applications for the zine opened from September 15th to October 2nd[13]. Results were sent out by October 6, 2020[14].

Gumroad subscriptions for the zine opened on November 20, 2020. To avoid the mishaps of potentially unsent emails that occurred the previous run, the organizers performed a test run of their email system days in advance[15]. The zine officially began on December 1, 2020[16]. Due to a high number of fans subscribing or donating on the day of launch, the organizers resent the email for the first day of the zine[17].

The compiled version of the zine was available for download from Gumroad on December 25, 2020[18]. From January 1 to January 15, 2021, a physical release of the zine was made available on bigcartel, featuring printable recipe cards and additional comments from contributors on their inspiration behind each piece[19]. By January 16th, the zine raised $365.65 USD to donate to Starlight Children's Foundation[20].

Shipping of physical orders began approximately after January 26, 2021[21]. By February 1st, all physical orders had been shipped out[22].

Extra physical copies of the zine were up for sale on February 3rd[23]. A "Halfway to Holidays" giveaway for four separate physical copies of the zine was run from July 2 to July 25, 2021[24]. The winners were declared to be Twitter users shadowcatkun, a_puckish, Mars00nmar, and JunCtionTea[25].

2021

Interest checks for a 2021 run of the zine was launched on August 17, 2021, and would end on August 27th[29]. Applications officially opened from September 10th to September 24th[30]. Application results were sent out by September 29, 2021[31]. On September 30th, the project's organizers launched their carrd website and their Curiouscat[32]. This would change later after the shutdown of Curiouscat on December 19, 2021, leading all queries to be taken from the project's Tumblr account[33].

Fans could begin subscribing to the zine through Gumraod on November 20, 2021, to start receiving their daily gifts on December 1st[34]. Like previous runs, for every day a new gift was sent out, the project's social media account posted a preview of the gift and spotlight the contributor who made it.

Preorders for digital and phyiscal compilations of the zine opened on bigcartel from December 26, 2021, to January 15, 2022, with the following pricing tiers[35]:

  • Physical Bundle ($25 USD) - Physical Zine, Shaker Keychain, Printable Coloring Pages, Printable Cutouts, Behind the Scenes PDF
  • Digital Bundle ($15 USD) - Digital Zine, Printable Coloring Pages, Printable Cutouts, Behind the Scenes PDF
  • Shaker Keychain ($10 USD)

Physical orders began shipping approximately after January 18, 2022, as merchandise arrived and were ready to be packageds[36]. Digital rewards were sent on January 22nd[37].

The zine's store reopened for merchandise and leftover physical and digital copies on January 22, 2022[38]. Leftover sales ended on February 15, 2022[39].

The organizers reported later on February 17, 2022, that $450 USD was donated to Starlight Children's Foundation[40].

2022

A 2022 run of the zine was first teased on September 20, 2022, quickly followed by a full announcement[45]. Applications opened from September 23rd to October 8th[46].

The zine was open for subscriptions on Ko-fi starting November 16, 2022, announcing a return to a digital only format[47]. The zine began sending out gifts to subscribers on December 1st, as well as posting previews and contributor spotlights for each day[48].

A full compilation of the zine with information about the contributors was open for download on December 25, 2022[49]. The zine's shop closed on January 15th.

A day after all sales were over, the organizers reported that $1287 USD was raised and donated to Starlight Children's Foundation[50]. In addition to announcing donations, the lead mod also announced that this run would be the last one with the following note of thanks:

And that's a (gift) wrap!! After all donations were in, we were able to raise over $128 for @/StarlightUS and, over the four years that the Hearts for the Holidays has been running, we've donated over $1287 to this wonderful cause!! Thank you all SO much for your support. 🧵

That being said, we couldn't have done this without the hard work and support of our amazing contributors. PLEASE make sure that you check back through our media tab or our ko-fi page for all the details on these talented folks-from this year and beyond!

And on that note, it's with a somewhat heavy heart that I'm officially announcing this as our last Hearts for the Holidays. It's been an amazing four years! What started out as a silly idea with a few friends one day, turned into an annual event that's meant so much to so many-

I've had the opportunity to work with so many imaginative and incredibly talented creators, caring and dedicated moderators, and have been the first zine for so many that have gone on to do AMAZING things! Thank you all for your support, for your patience (c)

For spreading joy through these silly holiday ideas and creating works that continue to inspire today. From the bottom of my heart, I hope that you've all enjoyed this zine as much as I have, and here's to more adventures-Holiday or no- yet to come.
