Canonity
Since Persona 4’s release, the ship’s popularity has been partly due to an intended romance option for Yosuke that was cut from the game. Many players felt that the two characters still had chemistry despite the route being cut, and a mod was released in 2020 that restores the romance route using voiced dialogue left in the game files.
Some canonical dialogue in the anime and the final cut of the game seem to suggest that Yosuke has romantic interest towards the protagonist, leading many fans to suggest that Yosuke is closeted; this has been highly debated since the game’s release and made the Souyo ship more well-known.
