Greg Ellis is a voice actor best known for his role as Cullen in Dragon Age.

Fandom

Greg Ellis used to frequently engage with Dragon Age fans following the popularity of Cullen. Fans of this character are called Cullentites.

Cancel Culture Video Incident

His popularity inside fandom decreased after several incidents, one in particular where he ranted about cancel culture and sexism as his character Cullen. The original video suffered backlash from fans and has since been made private.

This incident seems to have stemmed from Ellis' political views and public behaviour. When, on August 27 2020, Ellis posted on Twitter (X) about Dragon Age 4 (later revealed to be called Dragon Age: Dreadwolf) and if Cullentites were excited to have him back as Cullen, many fans grew worried about his possible involvement with the game. elfybits on Twitter (X) tagged the official Bioware page with the following message:

I really think it's time for

@bioware

to make an official statement on where they stand with Greg Ellis. Listen to your supporters, this man is literally hurting people.[1]

Attached to the message was a screenshot of one of Ellis' posts: It's official @Dragon Age 4 Thank you @Bioware Are you excited #Cullentites?

Mark Darrah, who worked as director for Dragon Age 2: Mark of the Assassin, replied to elybits with:

Like you, it's important to us that the people we work with are aligned with our BioWare values. This will be apparent when we're ready to announce which actors will be lending their voices to the game[2]

It appeared that due to this, Ellis grew resentful of Darrah, and so, when, a year later, Mark Darrah shared news of his resignation from Bioware, Ellis replied to him in the following manner:

And a relief for many others.

I’ve worked with you for over 10 years as the voice of Cullen (and Anders) @dragonage & have never worked w a more DISLOYAL, duplicitous corporate fake

Your enforced *resignation* is a victory for @bioware

,its employees & particularly the fans.[3]

Ellis posted a video in defence of his political views later. Following are a few excerpts of fan commentary related to the video:

"Hmm, my forty minute long political rant might make me look a little unhinged. How can I avoid that? Oh, of course! I'll do it all while pretending to be a magical knight from a fantasy world!"[4]

His very first statement when he began the actual rant was literally "Not all men". And I should have had the forethought to stop watching at that point. And then he said we could solve sexism and patriarchy by going back to the Chivarlic Code and I close the video. Truly, that's three minutes of my life I'm never getting back. I dare not watch the rest of it, lest I die of cringe.[5]

Some hours after the video was posted, fans could no longer access it:

nah I'm pretty sure he set it to private sometime last night, I had it loaded on one tab from a few hours earlier but i tried to open it in another tab from his twitter (because i couldn't load comments anymore) and it said the video was private. I'm assuming he took it down because Mark Darrah said he could get in trouble for using Cullen's character to pass off his ideas.[6]
