Canon
Gintoki and Hijitaka meet in the 6th lesson and 5th episode of the Gintama manga and anime respectively. They share many similarities which leads them to butt heads quite often. They view each other as nuissences at first but they then learn to trust each other. They are friendly rivals.
Fandom
Ginhiji is one of the most popular ships in the fandom, especially in the Japanese side of the fandom. The anime itself made references to it. Fans have labeled 5th of October as GinHiji day and 10th of May as HijiGin day (Combination of Birthday dates: Gintoki was born on 10th of October and Hijikata on 5th of May). In the Japanese fandom, there are many parallel variations of the ship that are explored in many different doujinshi,
Some of them include:
- Patch (Pattsuchi in japanese) Based on the spin-off work "3rd Year Z Class Ginpachi Sensei." Gintoki (Ginpachi in the AU) is a teacher and Hijitaka is his student.
- Zessan ( Reverse 3Z ) The reverse of Patch, student Gintoki and teacher Hijikata.
- DKS, Gintoki and Hijitaka are classmates.
- Vice-President, where Gintoki serves as vice-captain of the Shinsengumi along with Hijikata.
- Pa Sat, refers to Gintoki and Hijitaka cross-dressed.
- Focco, a yokai story based on the Anikuji "Gintama: Go with the flow, Halloween yokai edition." Refers to the nine-tailed fox Gintoki x Karasu tengu Hijikata.
- Clone Gintoki , this refers to the pairing of Clone Gintoki and Clone Hijikata who appeared in the game "Gintoki vs Hijikata!? The Great Battle for Kabukicho Silver Balls!!"
- Bar Examination, the parody setting of lawyer Sakata Gintoki and prosecutor Hijikata Toshiro.
- W Oni / Oni Gin-Tsuchi This refers to a parallel setting of Oni Gintoki x Oni Hijikata based on Hyakki Yagyo merchandise. The origin of the demons has not been explicitly stated, but it has been speculated that Gintoki may be Shuten-doji and Hijikata may be Ibaraki-doji (incidentally, there is also a theory in legend that Shuten-doji and Ibaraki-doji were lovers).
