Reactions and Reviews: Issue 1
The orientation of this zine is Classic; though Diana appears, briefly and effectively, in the final long novelette (of which more later), she's not really part of the action. The zine consists of three stories and a novelette. In Martha's “Where is the Hope,” Vincent meets acupuncture after the Trilogy; “Gifts of the Gods” by Claudia Mullen presents interlocking profiles of Gabriel, Vincent, and Catherine in an interesting SND scenario with a surprising revelation at the end (also available as a separate zine): see review; Martha's “When the Bluebird Cries” doesn't involve Kristopher but a serial killer stalking C. The final novelette, “Nothing but Madness” by Hebert and Mullen, is a mind-bogglingly complex alternate 3rd season featuring dreams-within-dreams and an interesting explanation of THE RINGS' history and meaning. Editing/proofreading has some lapses but fiction has beginners' verve and energy. Features promotional photos from Republic, some seldom seen.[2]
Issue 2
Follow Your Heart 2 is subtitled, "Nothing But Madness, Anarchy is Loosed Upon the World." It was edited by Claurid Mullen. It was published in 1993 (?) and contains 268 pages. It is illustrated by photos from the show.
Reactions and Reviews: Issue 2
The story of this massive novel is alternate 3rd season, continuing the scenario of Mullen's novelette, “Nothing But Madness,” in Follow Your Heart 1. There's lots of action delivered in a mildly clunky prose style (sample, from p. 31: “Gabriels' words struck Elliot Burch with all the impact of a speeding train. His heart clenched with dread as he attempted to overcome the sensation of panic in his chest.” From p. 90: “Rational reason had deserted her, along with her hopes and dreams.” From p. 214: “Catherine addressed the indistinct bulk, lurking somewhere in the shadows of her dark mind.... The infernal apparition from the darkness descended into her splintered mind and very gradually, it took shape.” From p. 216: “He replied slowly, but deep down, he could feel the tentacles of time reaching out for them. He would have to hurry or soon, she would be irretrievable.”).In this story, brothers Gabriel and Snow, under the domination of their evil father, Othello Louis Domitian the First, again menace Catherine-Gabriel by being acquitted at his trial, Snow by escaping from Attica prison. Besides Joe Maxwell and intrepid investigator Diana Bennett, characters who figure in the action include Devin, Mitch Denton, and Kristopher Gentian. THE RINGS are also important. The story gets rather complicated at points, but it's all quite readable and moves along at a breakneck pace, with lots of suspense and menace as the bad guys, willingly or unwillingly, further Domitian's plan to gain control of his third adoptive son- Vincent. More an adventure (captive Catherine is tortured and nearly loses her mind, for about 100 pages) than a romance, the story turns out all right in the end.
There's no art in this zine. Instead, each chapter has a picture either from the series or of the actor involved, presumably captured from the tv and reproduced. The tiny dot-matrix print is rather hard to read in spots but the action-filled story will keep those pages turning.[3]
