Flying erase head is a term that VCR-era vidders were very familiar with.

Older model VCRs did not have the flying erase head capabilities which meant the editing between clips was clumsier and contained "rainbow-noise."

Machines with a flying erase head meant a vidder could make much cleaner edits, resulting in vid quality that fans are familiar with today.
