The dsvirtualbar community on tumblr has been celebrating Flower Crown Day intermittently since 2014. The first year seems to have been unplanned and may have been inspired by tumblr's 2013 flower crown meme.

In subsequent years more fanwork types were encouraged and the event was renamed several times as the scope expanded.[2] In 2021, all fandoms are eligible.
