A fake fan is a person who "socializes with fans but has little or no interest in the subject of the fandom."[1]

According to Fancyclopedia, it is a science fiction fandom term that was originally used around 1940 to refer to Jack Wiedenbeck, who was roommates with fans.[2] Fancyclopedia notes that despite being labeled a fake fan, he did plenty of fanac.[3] Fandom has carried on the tradition of using the label inaccurately, sometimes as an accusation against fans who don't know enough canon trivia.
