Final Fantasy VII Remake (Japanese: ファイナルファンタジーVII リメイク, Hepburn: Fainaru Fantajī VII Rimeiku) is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix as the remake of the 1997 PlayStation game Final Fantasy VII. The first installment of the Remake was released on 10 April 2020 for the PlayStation 4.

Background

In the years immediately following the release of the original Final Fantasy VII (1997), there was a stark and rapid advancement in the graphical quality of CGI-animated media, including video games. Many fans agree that Cloud Strife's visual appearance in Kingdom Hearts (2002) was leagues better than his original low-polygon appearance. To some extent, potential newer fans were put off experiencing the original game due to its "blocky" graphics being difficult for whippersnappers to enjoy and take seriously. Advent Children (2005) further showed off the VII cast with cutting-edge CGI animation. Thus, for about twenty years, fans clamored for Final Fantasy VII to be remade so that its many iconic moments could be rendered in HD glory.

Reception

The first installment of the Remake was received enthusiastically and favorably by critics and general audiences alike.

Speculation and theories

Because the Remake is a remake of existing source material, fans have ardently drawn up predictions and theories about how the Remake story may follow and eschew the original story.

Criticism

"Original game (OG) purists" have been around as early as the release of Advent Children (2005). Some condemn OG purists as gatekeeping boomers, while others assert that OG purists have legitimate criticisms about the direction of Final Fantasy VII as a multi-installment franchise, particularly in relation to the narrative themes established by the original game.
