Everyday Elf was an email discussion group. The topic was costume creation for the Lord of the Rings movie fandom, specifically for stealth cosplay.

It was created on April 16, 2003 by Thoroniel of Imladris and Lothlorien. That month there were 131 messages, with discussion sharply tapering off over the next six months. The last post by a member was in October 2005.

As of October 2019, the group had 406 members.

Description

A group dedicated to researching and adapting the costumes of Middle-Earth, both from J.R.R. Tolkien's books and from Peter Jackson's interpretation The Lord of the Rings movie, for everyday wear.

We welcome all levels of adaptation; from turning a dress into a shirt to wear with jeans, to just shortening a dress for everyday wear.

We are interested in all the costumes of The Lord of the Rings, both "leading" characters, extras, and just "in the style of", but most of us will have a focus on the fantastical Elven costumes. We're here to discuss everything from fabrics, to makeup and hair, to patterns, to embroidery, to jewelry.

So hop on in and get medieval!![1]

History

In the early part of 2004, spammers started posting frequently to the group. This was partly due to the fact that the group was unmoderated, with no posting restrictions for new members. Members requested help from moderators, but by 2005 there were none actively moderating the group and spam continued unabated.[2]

On August 24, 2005, a replacement list was created[3] by Alyssa Crawford at everydayelf2. This group was partially moderated; messages from new members required approval. As of October 2019, the everydayelf2 group had 47 members.

First Post

Welcome one and all! I vfinally got this little puppy goin' after about sixty million people emailing me about it.

Please feel free to talk about everything costumey, and occasional off-topic posts are fine; just label them O/T in the subject line, and use discretion, please!

Also feel free to upload photos that you've found on the web of LOTR costumes; just make sure that you either have the site's PERMISSION to use them or have checked their disclaimer section to MAKE SURE they don't care if you take them. Please include a description saying what the picture is IN THE DESCRIPTION line, not actually in the title. If you're planning on having a whole bunch of pictures of one costume or whatever, create a new subfolder under the appropriate folder in the files section, just so I can keep track. I do in fact reserve the right to move pictures around and organize things more clearly if I feel it's necessary.

Also, if you find a necklace you think is in the Elvish style online, or if you find a clothing store that carries extremely Rohan-looking boots, etc., please feel free to post about your finds.

Thanks a bunch for motivating me to get this started!

Sweet water and light laughter,

Thoroniel[4]
