Issue 1
The Restoration Trilogy 1 is subtitled, "Restoration." It was published in April 1990 and contains 62 pages.
A synopsis by the author:
Catherine Chandler emerges from a coma with the help of Maggie, a guardian angel who gives Catherine a glimpse of Vincent and Diana Bennett's burgeoning relationship, as well as a look at Vincent's dreams. Catherine awakens in a private clinic, cared for by a doctor who saved her life by sacrificing the life of an FBI agent who was Catherine's double. Determined to return to New York, Catherine turns to Diana for help. Catherine is reunited with Joe Maxwell. Vincent visits Diana but flees in horror at the sight of Catherine, convinced she is a dream. Catherine goes Below and nurses her son. She discovers that Maggie is actually Margaret, Father's lost love. Vincent is overwhelmed with joy to discover that Catherine's return is real. Diana vows to find out how Vincent really feels about her. [1]
Preface from the zine:
For those of us who love to read, write and draw, Beauty and the Beast has been a godsend. The richly realized characters and the backdrop against which they act provide an unending source of creative inspiration.
Oddly enough, the painful demise of Cathy and the introduction of Diana’s character have opened an even wider world of story and art possibilities. In the months and years ahead, I’m certain we will see works focusing on the traditional Cathy/Vincent relationship; a possible Vincent/Diana relationship; and stories dealing with Cathy’s return.
The story you hold in your hands falls into the latter category. Initially I did not miss Cathy as much as I thought I would. Still, I found myself intrigued by this premise: what would happen if Cathy’s death was a hoax? What would her life be like, post-Gabriel? What effect would her return have on Vincent, Diana, Joe, the tunnel community? What conflicts would arise in a possible Cathy/Vincent/Diana triangle?
In "Restoration” and subsequent stories, I will explore this permutation of the dream. According to the producers of our show, "It’s not a fairytale anymore.” Maybe so. But it’s still a remarkable love story and a dream worth cherishing.
Issue 2
The Restoration Trilogy 2 was published in July 1990 and contains 89 pages. The cover is by Cat. It has the subtitle, "Wildest Dreams".
A synopsis by the author:
Catherine starts her life Below by building up her strength and acquainting herself with her new family. Ties with her tunnel family grow stronger as she begins to join in the life of the community. Shortly after Catherine's return, Vincent visits Diana to apologize for being unable to deepen their relationship. Catherine and Vincent face growing disagreement about intimacy between them.
Vincent can't remember the night Jacob was conceived and is uncertain about fathering any more children. When they begin having serious problems, Catherine once again enlists Diana's aid. Sybil Lawton, a psychiatrist and friend of Diana's, agrees to provide counseling for Catherine and Vincent. Through deep hypnosis. Dr. Lawton helps Vincent work through his feelings and remember the night he and Catherine first made love. Catherine and Vincent reach a new level of intimacy, thus binding them even closer in their love for each other. [2]
Issue 3
The Restoration Trilogy 3 was published in December 1990 and contains 134 pages. The cover and interior art is by Cat. It has the subtitle,"Ever After".
A synopsis by the author:
Diana and Joe are contacted by the nurse who worked for Gabriel during Catherine's confinement. The nurse reveals that she helped save Catherine's life. She leaves a music box belonging to Catherine. Diana and Joe return the music box to Catherine, who is angry at her friends for allowing the nurse to go free (soon the nurse is brutally murdered by Jonathan Pope, Gabriel's former assistant). Joe begins a search for the mysterious black book that nearly cost Catherine her life. Joe and Diana begin to fall in love. Vincent proposes to Catherine, and she accepts. Shortly before the wedding, Catherine discovers she is pregnant. Nancy Tucker and Devin make surprise appearances at the wedding. After the wedding, Catherine shares her good nevs vith Vincent. During her pregnancy, Catherine suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder, which brings on depression, lethargy and an obsessive desire to escape outside. One cold winter night, Jonathan Pope captures Joe Maxwell and drags him Below. Vincent and Diana kill Pope and rescue Joe, who has found the black book. Vincent returns home to find that Catherine has miscarried a son who is a tiny replica of Vincent. Shortly thereafter Catherine discovers she is still pregnant. During labor Catherine and Vincent recover their emotional bond, and Catherine gives birth to twin girls: Maggie, who is a "normal" child, and Ellie, who resembles her father. The tunnel world rejoices at the births. [3]
