Evageeks is a Neon Genesis Evangelion fansite. In addition to hosting discussion forums for fans, it is also home to an NGE-focused wiki and several analytical essays. In addition to the site itself, site staff maintain a Discord server, a Twitter/X account, and a Youtube channel.

History

Founding

It was founded in 2007 by several Evangelion fans, most prominently Reichu, owner of EvaCommentary.org and EvaMonkey, owner of an eponymous website. In his launch post for the site, Eva Monkey positioned it as a combination of his and Reichu's sites with the work of other fans.[1] The site was designed to incorporate some of the most desirable elements of both websites, including an archive of the commentary project hosted on Reichu's site, and NGE-themed fannish resources like those on EvaMonkey's. [2]

Notable Members

  • Reichu - former mod, left in 2020[3]
  • EvaMonkey
  • Mr. Tines - mod[4]
  • NemZ - former mod, passed away in 2017[5]

Notable Incidents

Early in the site's tenure, a user with the screenname V clashed repeatedly with Reichu, particularly over his edits to the site's wiki. The conflict resulted in V being banned from the site and feeling extremely bitter towards EvaGeeks as a whole. V ultimately started his own NGE-focused Youtube channel, ReVolutionOfEva, attempting to compete with Evageeks for a time before giving up. He was known for appearing at cons and in interviews with voice actors while wearing V for Vendetta cosplay. [6]

In September 2011, voice actress Amanda Winn-Lee joined the forum for roughly three days. Winn-Lee, who played Rei Ayanami in the original ADV English dub of the series, was heavily involved in the Manga Entertainment dub of End of Evangelion as a director, producer, and scriptwriter.[7] In her initial post, she apologized for sound design choices in the dub as well as her humor in a commentary track released on the DVD release. After she proved that she was who she said she was, the initial reaction was positive, even from fans who were less than pleased with her direction of the dub. [8] However, after a forum user going by HAL9000 responded with extreme negativity, she ultimately left the site.[9]
