Canon
Dovewing is introduced with a minor mention in "Sunrise" as Dovekit. She then becomes a main character of the "Omen of the Stars" arc, in which she is the third cat of the prophecy stating that three cats, kin of Firestar's kin, will be born with the power of the stars in their paws. Her power is revealed to be the ability to see and hear far beyond her natural limits, and the arc focuses on her, Lionblaze, Jayfeather and Ivypool defeating the Dark Forest.
She continues to be a prominent character in the current books, and the novella "Dovewing's Silence" focuses on her reaction to losing her powers after the defeat of the Dark Forest.
A subplot throughout Omen of the Stars and A Vision of Shadows involves Dovewing's forbidden relationship with Tigerheart of ShadowClan, which ultimately results in her joining ShadowClan with their kits so that they could be together.

Controversies
- Eyes: Dovewing's eye color is described at times as blue, green and gold. The contradiction was a subject of heavy debate, exacerbated by controversy around the Warriors Wiki. A number of fanworks choose to depict her with either heterochromatic eyes or eyes that change colors when she uses her powers as a solution to this.
- Bumblestripe: Some fans take issue with how Dovewing was pressured into a romance with the character Bumblestripe simply because Bumblestripe was interested in her, despite Dovewing never being interested in more than a friendship.
