The Doctor Who Restoration Team (DWRT or Restoration Team for short) is a loose collection of Doctor Who fans, many working in the television industry, who restore Doctor Who episodes, and episodes of other classic British TV shows, for release on DVD.
The team was formed in 1992 when a small group of Doctor Who fans approached the BBC's Television Archivist wanting funding for a unique project. This first restoration done by the team was the Third Doctor adventure "The Daemons" (1971), combining a low-quality colour copy and a high resolution 16mm black and white image.[1]
The results of this were so successful that the BBC Archives provided further funding to the DWRT to restore three more complete stories. Since then, the Team has expanded and has contributed to many Doctor Who projects for both BBC Television and BBC Worldwide. These include many of the final Doctor Who VHS releases and all of the "classic series" DVD releases to date.[2]
The team's original ethos was that they only aimed to return episodes to their original broadcast quality and never "improve" the dated special effects. They later "backtracked" on this and produced some retouched "special editions", but always provided the "untouched" version as well.[1]
Using their industry and fan contacts, the DWRT also traveled the globe seeking copies of lost episodes, such as "The Web Of Fear" and "The Enemy Of The World" which were located in a Nigerian TV studio in 2013.[1]
