In an interesting twist on the 'aliens made them do it‘ trope, it emerges in this reboot story, that Kirk and Spock were rescued from a planet where they had been administered a drug which causes them to be drawn to each other sexually, only to discover once back on board, that not only did the effects of whatever they were given, not wear off, but their ability to control themselves around each other is actually diminishing as time goes on, becoming an addiction they seem completely unable to overcome. A challenge at the best of times, but added to this is the fact that Spock is currently in a relationship with Uhura. Desperate Times rates as one of the most angsty 'PWP' stories I've ever read. The tense narrative, the incredible tension between Kirk and Spock as they frantically fight the drug‘s unexpected after-effects, their realization it‘s not just about the sex, all really adds to the power of the story. I really enjoyed the characterisations with Kirk, initially at least, coming across as the stronger of the two in attempting to deal with the situation, apparently having greater control over himself than Spock, which is, in itself, an interesting turn-about. While Kirk is having a difficult time dealing with the situation, it's heart-rending to see the effect of this complete loss of control on Spock. This is a really good, beautifully written piece that‘s up to Jack Hawksmoor‘s high standards, and is well worth the read.
