Excerpts
Why MFU? What is it about the show that fuelled your creativity? Attitude and emotion. MFU’s attitude and my emotion, that is. I hadn’t thought about MFU for several decades when I watched The Russian Angel Affair on YouTube and discovered that my reaction to a certain secret agent was as strong as it had ever been. That seemed amazing after so many years, but there it was. Then I rewatched the series and the show’s positive worldview still appealed to me.
What keeps you passionate about creating in the MFU universe? The optimistic perspective of the canon, its multicultural and multilingual milieu, the productive international cooperation that UNCLE represents, the touch of science fiction in the plots and, most of all, the charisma of the main characters and the art with which DMC and RV brought those characters to life.
How would you respond to a critic who says, “Oh, you write fan fiction. You’re not a real writer.” I would probably shrug my shoulders and smile. Illya’s response might be to direct a glance over his glasses, with one eyebrow raised, and say it was a capitalistic view of art, turning creativity and the exchange of ideas into commodities to be sealed into airtight packages to be bought and sold.
