Excerpts

Why MFU? What is it about the show that fuelled your creativity?

I hadn’t actually written anything besides essays, term papers, and lab reports since the first time I went to college. I found MFU online. Then I discovered fan fiction. Then I got the dvds and my brain just went to work.

Some of the stories I read portrayed Napoleon as a complete jerk, and Illya as a wimp. You know, the My Little Illya. Or they portrayed him as dysfunctional. I just didn’t see either of them as dysfunctional.

I also saw a lot of stories that portrayed Illya as cold and unfeeling, and I’m sure he can be, but that wasn’t what I saw in the series.

I like the chemistry between the two actors and the characters they created.

What keeps you passionate about creating in the MFU universe? The characters. They’re just so malleable in my little hands. And there are so many ways to write them. I also really like the idea that I can use things that actually happened during the time period in the stories.

How would you respond to a critic who says, “Oh, you write fan fiction. You’re not a real writer.”

Actually, my brother said that during our visit on Thanksgiving (I forgot to bring the zine I wanted to show off). I told him what everyone tells me. You wrote it, it’s published, it counts.” I like that. It may not be a major journal or a best selling novel but it’s out there and anyone can get hold of it.

Face it, fan fiction can be just as difficult to write as the great American novel and everyone has an opinion regarding writing and what makes a writer. As fan fiction writers we write, therefore we’re writers.
