Excerpts
Why MFU? What is it about the show that fuelled your creativity?I was eleven when the series premiered, the youngest child in the iconic dysfunctional family. Things were pretty scary, to put it mildly. In fact, the world in general was a scary place in 1964 -- children were taught to "duck and cover," missiles could blow up Florida and Camelot could fall, and demure young women waited around in their Maidenform bras for their White Knight to come along and save them.
Enter Illya and Napoleon, two noble, intelligent, sexy men on a mission to save the world. And one of them was a Soviet! I was in love, with those gorgeous men, with their relationship to one another, and with the idea of an organization dedicated to peace through mutual respect among nations. I didn't want to be saved by UNCLE; I wanted to join it, to stand beside Illya and Napoleon as an equal, fighting the good fight. MFU gave me hope. It helped me to survive, and it inspired my soul.
If you had to do it all over again, would you and what would you change in the process? I would have started writing thirty years ago! Honestly, it just never occurred to me that I could write, or that it would be so much fun.
What is the story you “dare not write” or the picture “you dare not create”? I have a (sort of) death fic in mind, but I'm not sure people would want to read it. I know there's a predisposition in the community to avoid such stories. Oddly enough, it's a story of hope, and that's what keeps me thinking about writing it.
