Summary
Summary from the flyer:
Beneath the churning face of the winter ocean lies a world that has never known the sun since the Earth was formed. In endless night, freezing cold and crushing pressure, life struggles to exist in its most primitive form.
In the Twentieth Century, humankind has learned to invade the sanctity of this untravelled realm, and the ways of war prowl its sable deeps, invisible, lethal and the bane of peace.
A CI-5 contingent joins groups from other agencies and the military for cross-training in underwater technology and methods when they are tasked by the Home Office with providing anti-terrorist response measures to ensure the security of exploration rigs drilling into the rich Northern Ireland Field, prime targets for a hungry IRA bent on dealing blazing fury to Whitehall.
But when a Soviet Electronic Surveillance Ship goes down in the icy deeps far to the west of Britain, CI-5 is embroiled in a breakneck international race to reach the vessel. How did she sink? Was it simple tragedy or an act of war? Why are British and US intelligence so tight-lipped when KGB is prepared to be forthcoming? CI-5 can learn only so much by conventional means, and the doomsday clock is crawling toward midnight, an out-of-control tumble toward the ultimate failure of civilization should the mystery prove irresolute. War is looming, and no one knows why.
Matters are far from clear when it comes time for Bodie and Doyle to take the ultimate plunge, join with a NATO contingent to descend into the abyss, to find the ship and unlock the world-shattering secret that lies in her heart. But even with the finest Navy assistance, the most advanced, cutting-edge technology, the task is Herculean, and the ghost ship of the grey Atlantic doesn’t want to be found.
Act of war? Sabotage? For what desperate reason? Of human making, or from somewhere, something, far, far beyond? Tangled ethics face off with grim duty as NATO faces the Warsaw Pact on the deep frontier, but nothing can prepare CI-5’s elite for the ultimate reality awaiting them in that steel hulk, lost in the reaches of innerspace!
