Relationship with Fandom

From Professional Author Fanfic Policies#Authors Who Support/ed Fanfic About Their Work, MacHale approves of fanfiction:

[Interviewer]

Your website has a very active forum for your fans. I also noticed that you allow fan fiction using your characters – something that some other authors are very opposed to. What are your thoughts on fan fiction? Do you have any legal or copyright concerns about fan fiction?

D.J. MacHale: I think it's great. If fans are that involved with my characters that they want to write their own stories with them, then I'm all for it. I'm not concerned about copyright. It's not like they're selling it...as far as I know. Hmmm... On the other hand, to be honest, I don't read the fanfic stories. I'm afraid it would make me nuts. Maybe if I actually read them I ’d have a different opinion. But I don’t want to discourage the kids.

Note: The website in this quote is now defunct. It was the host of the “old Pendragon forums” under Pendragon#Fannish Links. This doesn’t mean that MacHale has shifted to discouraging fanfiction, however, as there is a blog post on the 2011 (current) site for fanfiction in the comments: Fan Fiction Spot ( archived link).
