Reactions and Reviews
Though set after the series, this zine is Continued Classic...without C. In a set of four loosely connected stories, it details the stages of Vincent's coming to terms with loss and change-his “becoming real” through grief and acceptance. Its title image is one of steadfastness: well past childhood, Jacob refuses to drink milk from anything but his favorite mug, his “cup of stars,” a gift from his Uncle Devin, important in several of these stories. V commends Jacob's preference: “Be stubborn, Jacob. Insist on your cup of stars. Once they make you give it up, it's gone forever.” In these stories, V wishes to join C in death, is proposed to, raises Jacob, tries to ease Father's passing and comfort embittered Mary, and at last joins Devin in a visit to a cabin Devin and Charles shared. There's a lot more Joseph Campbell (“follow your bliss”; the “holy rainbow”) than romance here, but the stories are definitely about love in many guises. Diana appears briefly in a non-romantic context. The author describes these leisurely, often somber stories as “poignant,” and she's right: keep plenty of tissues close at hand. Pro artist Colby Pfeil's borders and pen-and-ink illustrations, the latter done one-sided on unnumbered pages, capture the quiet mood of the stories. [1]
