About The Convention
The zine has a long foreword by the convention organizer Laura who was also the zine editor:
I want to welcome everyone to the 30th annual Beauty and the Beast convention. The name of this year's convention, Crossing the Great Waters in Love's Name, comes from the wedding scene in China Moon. "Let your courage to love serve as an inspiration to all who climb the highest mountains and cross the great waters in Love's name." But I think the other half of the convention name, Reunion on The Great lakes, may better describe our gathering. A reunion of "found family" in a beautiful place.. .is there a better way to spend your vacation? It's hard to comprehend that we have been coming together for 30 years now. Most fandoms don't last very long once the show is off the air but as we know, our fan community doesn't follow the "normal" path. We have seen a lot of changes over this long period of time but despite our difficulties or hardships-just as during Winterfest-we all come together to remind ourselves that we are not alone and that we are part of a community. These conventions are one of the many ways that we can continue that tradition.
I have been thinking about hosting a Beauty and the Beast convention since I first started attending them back in 1991. But back "in the old days," that would have been a huge undertaking! (I can't imagine hosting a con for nearly 1,000 attendees without the internet or cell/smartphones or Paypal or The Cloud, or...or... or. .. !) But after making my first foray back into convention-going (Cleveland, 2013) and seeing the current intimate nature of the con, I felt it could be a possibility. I first seriously started thinking about it in October, 2015, after a conversation about Mackinac Island on Facebook. That talk gave me the confidence to dive in and take a chance. Wow, was I in for a wild ride!
Memories of Those Who Have Passed
The fanzine also contained a longer essay remembering two fans who passed away that year.
Although we have not been immune in the past to losing members of our fan community, the time since our last convention has been especially hard. Because of this, we will be having several opportunities for everyone to share stories/thoughts about our lost loved ones and we will also be doing several tributes throughout the convention weekend. Hopefully this will give all of us another opportunity to continue with the healing process. With all of this being said, I want to also express my gratitude to those families that have donated their loved ones' Beauty and the Beast collections with the proceeds going to charity:
- The family of Gloria Handley
- The family of Pat Lurvey
In particular the fanzine publisher talked about Pat Lurvey who ha agreed to help co-chair the 2018 and 219 conventions:
One of those special people was Pat Lurvey. Back in May of 2016, I first confessed to Pat that I would be hosting this convention. This led to her confession that she would be hosting the 2018 convention in Chicago and to the agreement that we would be on each other's convention committees. Over the next 2 years, we would bounce ideas off of each other, virtually "cry" on each other's shoulders through emails and Facebook messages and celebrate when milestones were met. So when she fell ill and then passed away, it was an especially hard time for me to continue with the same enthusiasm as before. Her enthusiasm for the fandom and for our show will be sorely missed and difficult to duplicate but I know we will all try in our own unique ways to make sure her legacy continues.
