Why this must be read:
Because it is such an insightful look Victoria, and her feelings for Fraser and how the circumstances of their lives meant nothing good could ever come of that meeting at Fortitude Pass. Victoria's Secret gave us his perspective but very little of hers, and this fills in some gaps about her life in a way I find totally convincing. Here they are two people who do love each other, but by the time they meet it's already too late for a happy ending. A police officer and an armed robber? How was that EVER going to end well? So they have this intense connection, and all they can do with it is hurt each other. She's the villain of the episodes (albeit a nuanced one) but here we get a glimpse of Fraser maybe not being his best self with a vulnerable woman - he's so blown away by his reaction to her that he loses sight of where the balance of power lies between them. It reminds me of that thing Paul Haggis said, that they didn't consummate their relationship at Fortitude Pass: "No, I've always believed that their connection was much deeper than that. Which made Fraser's betrayal that much worse -- resulting in his fear of women. He couldn't face what he did, and that shame manifested itself as fear -- which we all took to be comic -- but was, in truth, paralyzing." (It is the subject of another, quite different post, how that also reads as queer, and we needn't all ascribe to Paul Haggis's view, but it casts plenty of scenes in quite a different light, doesn't it?)I love this glimpse of a darker side of Fraser through Victoria's eyes. It doesn't change who he fundamentally is, but he CAN make mistakes like anybody else and this fic makes me sympathise with Victoria and love him more both at the same time.
