A Cinematic Universe is a shared, fictitious world, where more than one universe and it's characters converge in a movie or TV series. This can happen by one or more characters that appear in other universes.
Det. John Munch from the TV series Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is a particularly notable case where one character has showed up (often in guest appearances) in many different TV shows that are not connected otherwise.[1][2]

Attempts
Due to the success of the MCU, many studios seemed to want to replicate this with their own attempts at shared universes, with mixed results and mixed reception from fans. One of the more well known attempts at a cinematic universe that failed to take off is Universal's Dark Universe which was intended to be kickstarted by 2017's The Mummy and feature Universal's classic monsters. However, due in some part to said film's underperformance at the box office and the poor reception, the idea seems to have been scrapped for individual films with little to no connection to each other. Some monster movie fans appear pleased at this change.
The concept has been poked fun of in the South Park Panderverse special.
