Chicago is a Broadway musical about female inmates in a prison in 1920s Chicago. It was written in 1975 and based on a 1926 play of the same title by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins (which was in turn based on real news stories Watkins reported on). The musical has seen multiple popular or long-running revivals, and a lot of the fandom is also based on the 2002 movie.

Canon

The plot centers on Roxie, a woman who murders her lover when he attempts to end their affair, and Velma a Vaudeville performer who murdered her husband and her sister when she caught the two having an affair. The story follows Roxie's trial and incarceration, experience in prison, and both women's eventual release. The story particular focuses on the public reaction to all of these events, and both womens' (and the reporters, lawyers, and prison staff around them) attempt to manipulate public opinion for their own ends.
