Cato/Clove (frequently referred to as Clato) is a pairing in the Hunger Games fandom. Both Cato and Clove are the District 2 tributes from the 74th Hunger Games in the series' first book.
In The Hunger Games film, Cato was played by Alexander Ludwig and Clove was played by Isabelle Furhman. Both actors have acknowledged the ship. [1]
Fans of the ship can be referred to as "Clatos."[2]
History
Canon Basis
Cato and Clove are the District 2 tributes and members of the Career Pack in the 74th Hunger Games. Little is known about them other than that they are both lethal and pose a significant threat to Katniss and Peeta during the books.
When the rules are rewritten to allow two tributes from the same District to win, Cato and Clove have this opportunity in addition to Katniss and Peeta.
The basis for the ship comes from Clove's death scene, when she calls out to Cato. As Clove is dying, Cato is shown to be distressed and holds her in his arms as she dies, begging her to stay with him. This shows that there was a strong emotional bond between the pair, though the exact nature of this is unknown to the reader as well as to Katniss.[2]
Cato vs. Glato
In the film, the decision was made to show Cato flirting with another of Cato and Clove's allies, Glimmer of District 1 (this ship is known as Glato). This choice angered many Clato fans.[3]
