Castle/Beckett is the pairing of writer Rick Castle and Detective Kate Beckett from the television series Castle.
Canon Overview
From the first minutes of the series opener, Rick Castle and Kate Beckett demonstrate unmistakable chemistry with one another - but given Castle's checkered romantic past and high profile in the media, Beckett is determined to resist his flirting and to keep their relationship professional. They spend the next four seasons trying (with little success) to ignore the ever-present UST, while most of their 12th Precinct colleagues are shipping the relationship and ready to bet how long it will take for the couple to hook up.
The initial resolution comes halfway into the series during the season 4 finale ("Always"), but though the couple quickly transitions into a more or less steady relationship for the remainder of the show's run, series writers found a variety of ways to complicate its development, mostly involving complicated conspiracies that threaten one or both of the couple's lives. A wedding is aborted between seasons 6 and 7 when Castle is kidnapped, but is eventually rescheduled and occurs several episodes into season 7. The series finale (concluding season 8) delivers both tragedy (both Kate and Castle are shot) and hope (the final scene, with a "Seven Years Later" onscreen tag, shows the couple at home with three young children).
Fandom
With very few exceptions, Castle fandom immediately adopted Caskett as the show's OTP. This led to equally immediate ongoing tension between fandom's and canon's takes on the relationship, as most fic tended to consummate and develop the relationship much more quickly than was happening onscreen. As a result, a high proportion of Caskett fics are at least somewhat AU due to canon divergence, and a number of writers have written extended series arising from their particular takes on the duo's married lives. Many fics also propose resolutions to the murder of Johanna Beckett (Kate's mother) different from that given in the show proper.
In general, fanon has most of the supporting cast - specifically including Martha Rodgers (Castle's mother) and Alexis Castle (his teenage daughter), as well as Beckett's colleagues at the 12th Precinct - strongly in support of the Caskett relationship. At the same time, there's very little active bashing of either Castle's or Beckett's occasional alternative partners.
