Reactions and Reviews

THIS. FIC. Okay, so a while back I was talking about fics that make you ache. This? is that fic. It’s beautifully written and just… dkfjgkljhg. I actually printed this one out and bound it at one point. (Don’t ask me how I’ve gone this far without reccing Pru; she is one of my absolute favorite authors and her SGA fic is BRILLIANT. You should also read Hindsight and Bell Curve, or, Ladies Night at the Boom Boom Room. And all of her fic in any fandom ever.)[1]

One of my favorite examples of the universe conforming to a person's inner weather is Cartography by Touch by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock (and in a very different way, History of Maps), which was one of the most closely, damply claustrophobic stories I've ever read. I had to read it twice, because for a story where John's mentally stuck in a room of rising water, externally, it moves around a lot. That doesn't change the feeling of walking ankle deep and watching the water flowing in with no way out. It's also one of the ones that give me a vague aversion to the ocean for a while.[2]

The best depiction of psychotherapy I ever read in fiction. A realistic portrayal of the aftermath of sexual assault for John, and for Rodney, with whom he had a pre-existing relationship. I like that the therapy’s crucial, but that John also heals in other ways, like by hanging out with the marine biologists. Therapy forces him to confront things that happened in his youth, and isn’t a quick fix. Lovely use of metaphor and imagery as well.[3]
