A cp fan is a fan of a couple. The term is used in Chinese-speaking fandoms, where CP fans are differentiated from fans who don't engage in shipping. CP fans are often at odds with "solo" fans who love only one celebrity (chunfen).[1][2]

"CP fan" and "CPF" have been adopted by some English-speaking fans of Chinese media.

The abbreviation CP originated in Japanese animation/comics/gaming fandom.[3][4][5] Chinese fannish terminology contains a number of borrowings from Japanese-speaking fandom.[6]

Sources give the original Japanese term for pairing as カップリング (kappuringu), meaning "coupling".[5][7] The Japanese version of the Wikipedia shipping page is titled カップリング (同人) and lists CP and カプ as abbreviations.[7]

Sources disagree on whether "CP" is short for "couple" or "Character Pairing".[8][4]

The use of "CP" in Chinese and Japanese fandom should not be confused with the common usage of the term in the English-speaking world, where it means "child pornography".
