Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a 1969 Western movie staring Paul Newman, Robert Redford and Katharine Ross. The film traces the adventures of two bank/train robbers in the 1890s and is loosely based on the lives of thieves Robert LeRoy Parker (Butch Cassidy), Harry Longabaugh the (Sundance Kid) and their partner, the young lady Etta Place.

Butch and Sundance execute a few robberies in America, Sundance meets and romances Etta Place (Ross), and when a robbery goes wrong Butch and Sundance go on the run, famously jumping off a cliff into a river to escape their pursuers. They meet up with Etta and all three travel to Bolivia where Butch and Sundance unsuccessfully try to build new lives.

Fandom

The fandom is small, but new works are still produced, occasionally for Yuletide. The film is considered by many fans to have all the hallmarks of a traditional slash canon source. The intense friendship and partnership (of the crime variety) between Butch and Sundance, illustrated by many scenes, most notably the dive in the river, and the casual nature of the romantic subplot make for a classic slash fandom.[1] Most of the fic is Butch/Sundance.

The source is also a classic setup for threesome or poly stories, and they do exist along with het works pairing Sundance with Etta Place. Because of the ending of the film, fix-it stories and AUs are also common.

A Trope

The characters Butch and Sundance were used as a trope in Starsky & Hutch fanfic for a time in the 1990s.
