Broken Image is a 332-page slash Queer As Folk novel by NJ Kippax and Susan K. James. From the publisher, "In the aftermath of a life-altering event, Brian Kinney survives only to face the challenges of rebuilding his image, with the help of his unconventional extended ‘family’ and the two men closest to him. It is Justin’s love and Michael’s friendship that show him the man he can be again."
Art has been included on Fanlore with the permission of the publisher's heirs.
The novel was originally released as an WIP online and then later published in print fanzine format.
Reactions/Reviews
"*wibble* Sundays have once again become the highlight of my week. Every Sunday, we are promised a new chapter of this pure genius series. Currently 4 chapters are up, it's apparently already completed, which is always a bonus. We're presented with an interesting role reversal (to some extent) between Brian and Justin, yet characterisation is still top notch. Every chapter sees the emotional progress of Brian Kinney, and this journey, ladies and gents, is not one that is easily travelled. And the revelations, and discoveries Brian makes on his journey is both such a rewarding, and at times, frustrating experience, yet everything - every reaction, every self criticism, every desire, every thought, is still so innately Brian. And that is what makes this story so fascinating. To see Brian (because it's not a copy of Brian, not a interpretation of Brian, but Brian - with all his weaknesses and strengths) put in this, almost unthinkable, situation. To see him live it, survive it, learn from it, and hopefully conquer it. My only complaint with this story, is something which I also appreciate. And that is the thorough and quite descriptive nature of the narration, which causes the pace of the story to slow down in some parts. I do understand though, that it is quite complicated to focus on both character and plot development, and it's probably unfair of me to point this out as a weakness. However, that aside, it's a rewarding read, and I'm truly grateful for the insight into the characters' minds, especially that of Brian's." ~ The Cream of the Crop, QAF Recs accessed March 6, 2013.
"Because I love H/c stories, especially Brian H/c stories. So many times, it's Justin down the well, and Brian has to save him. Sometimes, I like seeing Brian in peril and Justin coming to his rescue. Though, perhaps, this isn't as cut and dried as that. Consider this: what if the B/J separation after the Ethan fiasco was longer than canon? How would it affect Brian? In this AU version, Brian takes it to heart by throwing himself into work, work and work -- while his ache for Justin is gnawing at him from the inside, eating away his defenses, his strength. Until it all comes out in the form of an attack he had no idea was coming. The heart-wrenching scenario etched in this novel shows the aftermath of that event. But even in the midst of pain can come a ray of hope and healing. Like I said, it's not all cut and dried. Because by rescuing Brian, perhaps Justin can rescue himself as well. I'm sure 90% of the people in this fandom have already read this story, but it's always worth a re-read. Enjoy!" ~ QAF Faves dated November 19, 2009.
"A rare fic with Brian having a stroke and going through therapy, and various other things to get better and to combat his depression. This is a very true to life story and I truly loved reading it and found my chest aching sometimes when Brian jumped over another hurdle, or when he came crashing down on the other side. All the characters were very IC in this and I love Brian's brutal honesty which sometimes gets him in trouble if the other person doesn't stay patient enough to listen to the rest of the story. The scattered pictures throughout the chapters also adds to the whole affect and mood of the piece. Definitely a a good read (hell, I didn't even notice any spelling or grammar mistakes, and that's always a plus." ~ Non Snarry Recs accessed March 6, 2013.
"I'm speechless. From the very beginning your series has taken my breath away time and time again. It's no surprise that the final installment would have the same affect. You both should be very proud. Broken Image will stay with me long after QAF ends and I will never forget the Brian that you created and helped all of us root for, be furious with, and fall in love all over again with. He really was 'resurrected' from the ashes of his past life and shown that although his past surroundings had not changed, his place in those surroundings had. BRAVO!!! Give yourselves a round of applause and a couple of huge pats on the back." ~ FanFic and Video Discussions In Woody's Forum dated Jan 11, 2004.
