Billy the Intern is a part canonical, part fanon, background character on Total Drama. He first appeared during the run of Total Drama: Action. His design comes from an originally unnamed background stock character who frequently appeared as one of Chris McLean's many interns before Total Drama: Revenge of the Island premiered, and is the only one with a name and somewhat of a fan following.
In 2009, 'Billy' became his canonical name in a post to the official Total Drama blog.[1] Although fanworks for him are extraordinarily rare as of 2024, he's often still called Billy the Intern even by fans who joined the fandom later on.[2]
Name Origin
He was named 'Billy' by homestar-n00b on the Total Drama Fantics forum, a popular forum for the series during 2009, because he resembled Billy Idol.
THE ORIGINA while back, a kid named Jordan (you may know him as Saradomin, or you may not. he was one of the first TDI uploaders) made a forum for TDI/A fans, you know, to chat on, share fan creations, etc. It's got about 500-something members now. When episode 6 came out, me, him, and another friend--Grace (musicstorestandee)--were having the typical Team Trent/Team Gwen debate, and eventually we just got tired of arguing, so Grace, being the peace keeper that she is, screams out "I'm on team Intern! Did you SEE that guy?"

Suddenly this huge discussion explodes about this character that doesn't have much of a voice, name, origin, or even much of a personality. I'm not even joking--that's how bored we were. Then one user who's also a close friend of mine, Jenna (homestar-n00b), says "Hey, he kinda looks like Billy Idol." And I say, "Nah, he looks like Vince Offer, the Shamwow guy."
We all agreed, but for some reason, the name 'Billy' stuck--a lot. So, now there's this huge new thing we've been spreading through the TDI fanbase--"Billy the Intern" Grace is... obsessed with this guy, to say the least. She screams every time there's an aftermath episode cause she KNOWS she'll see him.
This has resulted in a MASSIVE explosion of Billy fanart, photoshops, and just general dedications. The creators even ACKNOWLEDGED him on the blog--that takes love.

I gave it to him. We were talking on the Late TDF about this new intern character and I was on a real Billy Idol high at the time, so I was all "This guy looks like a not spikey haired Billy Idol. Let's name him Billy! :D" I never thought that name would actually stick[3]
