For an action-packed AU, check out Between by Ariana Lussier. Blair is a famous profiler being stalked by a psychopath. Jim is the bodyguard hired to protect him. In Ariana's universe, Jim is more of an everyday, working Joe, and Blair is very strongly connected to his family. But still, the basic essence of the characters is alive and well, especially that wonderful spark of connection between them. The development of their relationship—from Jim's being a little put off by Blair's homosexuality to their becoming friends to their falling in love—really touched me.[1]

You know, that "the one where Blair is a brilliant profiler and Jim the bodyguard" story. Again, this is a story I could quote chapter and verse. A long, delicious, story with a fabulous plot and a Naomi who is *not* irritating and ingratiating. It never fails to pick me up when I'm feeling a bit out of sorts. Jim is so... Jim. I dearly love the man. [2]

This one is an AU with Jim as a cop, who had to leave the force and is now desperately looking for a job to make a living, and Blair as a profiler, who is stalked by a killer. They learn to know each other when Naomi, who plays a prominent role in this story, looks for a bodyguard for her son.

Guess who gets the job.

Usually I'm not this big a fan of AUs because a lot of stories use the term AU simply as an excuse to twist and abuse the characters into something that is not recognizable anymore. In my opinion, it's a real art to write an AU, let the characters adapt to the new universe/reality and at the same time still write them as the guys with the character-traits we know. It's difficult to do and often the AU-guys have nothing more in common with Jim and Blair than the names.

But I really like this one because it didn't fall into this trap.[3]
