Azula/Ty Lee, commonly knows as Tyzula, is a femslash pairing in the series Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Canon
Azula and Ty Lee are childhood friends, having grown up in the Fire Nation together. Azula recruits Ty Lee, alongside Mai, to help her hunt the Avatar. Ty Lee frequently complimented Azula, though this is likely more to do with Azula being in higher standing, and is one of few characters to be seen hugging her. A softer side to their friendship is shown while they are on vacation at Ember Island. After becoming irritated with seeing a a group boys flirting with Ty Lee, Azula makes a hurtful remark towards her. Azula then gives what is arguably the only genuine apology that has been seen from her in the series and admits that she was jealous of Ty Lee.
Azula later imprisons Ty Lee and Mai after Mai turned on her in order to help Zuko escape from the Boiling Rock. Ty Lee intervenes between the two by chi blocking Azula. Azula reacts badly to the betrayal and it highlights her eventual downfall.
Fandom
Tyzula is a moderately popular Avatar: The Last Airbender pairing overall, but is one of the most popular femslash ships in the fandom. This pairing gained popularity when Ty Lee and Azula's past as childhood friends was revealed and their interaction began, which many considered to be reminiscent of a possessive, romantic relationship. Once their relationship was further developed after their time on Ember Island, the pairing was quickly shot to a well-known ship. Some fans also believe that Ty Lee's betrayal was what sent Azula over the edge, and despite it, this pairing remains more popular than any other ship involving either girl in Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Grey DeLisle, who voiced Azula, is known to ship Tyzula, as she once stated that "Everybody knows Azula loves Ty Lee."[1] Additionally, in celebration of the Supreme Court's ruling on marriage equality in the United States, Grey DeLisle, while using her Azula voice, posted a video to her instagram stating that Ty Lee must now marry her.[2] Olivia Hack, the voice actor for Ty Lee, later responded in kind by saying she would marry Azula as she "love's love."[3] Fans were quick to merge the two videos into Tyzula fanvids.[4]
