Ava Silva/Sister Beatrice (also known as Avatrice) is the biggest pairing in the Warrior Nun fandom. It is a canonical femslash pairing.

Canon

After only a couple of scenes in the first half of season one, Ava and Beatrice end up working together to help Ava harness the halo's power before infiltrating the Vatican with Father Vincent, Mary, and Camila. After the events of the season one finale, Ava and Beatrice lay low in Switzerland and continue to train for the upcoming battle against Adriel.

It is during this time that the chemistry observed by fans in season one is confirmed as intentional and their feelings for one another become more apparent, to the viewers, if not necessarily to Ava and Beatrice at all times.

The season two finale sees the relationship canonically confirmed, before ending on a cliff-hanger.

One of the writers on the show, David Hayter, revealed that they hid scenes of Avatrice within the script after their Netflix executive told them they were “uncomfortable with sex on any level” and so did not want “to do this Avatrice thing."[1]

Fandom

Avatrice is a very popular sapphic pairing, not just within the Warrior Nun fandom, but amongst sapphic fandoms more broadly. As of November 2024, 3,786 of the 4,639 works in the Warrior Nun fandom tag on AO3 are tagged with Ava Silva/Sister Beatrice. In the AO3 Ship Stats 2023, Avatrice were 35th on the all-time F/F pairings list and 47th out of all pairings between August 2022-August 2023.

Fans shipped the pair shortly after their initial interactions in season one, though there was a sentiment at the time that the writers would not include anything other than a coming out story-line for Beatrice, with few fans convinced there would be a relationship between the pair in season two[2][3]. This was likely in part due to the growing distrust and dissatisfaction around how series including sapphic relationships were being cancelled with frequency in the 2020s. However, there was a vocal and enthusiastic fanbase for the pairing growing on platforms like Twitter and Tumblr, and a number of fanworks began to be written with the pair as the focus.

Common Tropes in Fanworks

  • Beatrice is a Badass (and Ava loves it) - Canonically, spoken verbatim by Ava, Beatrice is a badass and the fandom definitely embrace exploring this side of her in all kinds of fanworks.
  • Hurt/comfort and angst - Season 2 ended with a heavy dose of hurt/comfort for Avatrice, what with Ava having to go through a portal to an unknown other-realm, and it wasn't the only canonical bout of angst the two experienced. Fandomers are happy to continue the angst in their fanworks before (usually) heaping on a healthy dose of comfort to give the pairing a happy ending.
  • Sister Beatrice needs a hug - While being something of a stoic, quiet — and at times unassuming — bad-ass, Beatrice also is the recipient of a fair amount of angst in both canon and fanon. Understandably, fans often decide she needs a hug in fan-works after all of that.
  • Alternate Universe - There are a variety of different AU settings in this pairing's fandom, ranging from Avatrice working on a lighthouse in Norway to Ranch AUs to Movie Star AUs, with a lot of exploration of how the character arcs would be changed by circumstance and context.
  • Slow Burn - While the show had a relatively short slow burn compared to some long running shows, it was a longer slow burn than many sapphic relationships tended to get, and the tension and chemistry between Beatrice and Ava in the show led to slow burns also being popular in fanworks.
