Atypical is a Netflix 2018 TV show created by Robia Rashid. It's about Sam Gardner, an autistic teenager, and his journey towards self-discovery and independence as he reaches adulthood.
Canon
Criticisms
While the show was received favourably by a reasonable number of viewers — popular enough for Netflix to run it for 4 seasons and to a natural and planned conclusion — it was also heavily criticised for its portrayal of autism and lack of autistic actors or consultants involved in the show (a criticism which was acknowledged and changed after season one)[1][2], along with other aspects of the show. For example, the first season focuses heavily on Sam wanting to find a girlfriend, and many of the actions he carries out in pursuit of this (which are directly or indirectly stated to be the result of him being autistic) were criticised by autistic viewers. However, while there are arguably more critical reactions to the portrayal of autism in the show, some autistic people have also discussed how they found the character of Sam to be very relatable to them and their experiences[3].
Fandom
There is a small fandom for the show on Archive of Our Own, with 359 works as of the end of December 2024. The large majority of these were written after Izzie Taylor's introduction in season two, which introduced a femslash ship to the show. Prior to Izzie's introduction, the fandom was a microfandom on AO3, with fewer than 10 works.
Shipping
A majority of the fanworks on AO3 and in other spaces like Tumblr focus on the canonical femslash pairing of Casey Gardner/Izzie Taylor.
