The Assassin's Creed Big Bang (ACBB for short) was a recurring Big Bang challenge that ran for four rounds in 2011. Round Five was planned for early the next year, but was announced cancelled on February 20, 2012 due to lack of participation.[1][2][3]

The ACBB was hosted across a variety of platforms: originally just LiveJournal, but later some content was mirrored at WordPress, Dreamwidth, and Tumblr. The WordPress site was made due to DDoS issues being experienced on LiveJournal at the time of the first round,[4] and the Dreamwidth and Tumblr sites were started between Rounds Two and Three "because LJ sucks so hard".[5]

Round One

For Round One, artists submitted up to four artworks of "any medium (illustration, inked, video, fanmix, manip, etc)", and submissions were used as prompts for writers to base fanfic off of. The stories were required to be from 750 to 5,000 words, and each prompt could be claimed by up to three writers.[6][7]

22 images and one fan soundtrack were submitted and published for claiming on March 6, 2011, with a story deadline of 11:59 pm EST on April 5.[7] Fifteen stories came out of Round One.,[8][9]

Round Two

For Round Two, authors were to submit new fic from 4,000 to 20,000 words long. Eight story summaries were posted for artists to claim on June 3, 2011, with a final due date of June 30, 11:59 EST. One story was later withdrawn[10][11] but all the rest were claimed, so seven illustrated fics resulted from this round.[12][13]

Round Three

In this round, the LJ community took votes from users for the format, and the majority chose "Artist and author pair up to tackle a fandom trope".[14]

The twelve tropes offered for claiming on August 2, 2011 were as follows:[15]

  1. Alternate Universe
  2. Crossovers
  3. Canon Defilement
  4. Body swap
  5. The Four Loves aka affection/friendship/romance/unconditional love
  6. Fix Fic
  7. Gender flip
  8. Dark fic
  9. Aliens Made Them Do It
  10. "Everyone is Gay (or everyone is Captain Jack)"
  11. Mindlink Mates
  12. There is Only One Bed

Five stories came out of this round, using the tropes "There is Only One Bed", "The Four Loves", 2 stories for "Alternate Universe", and "Canon Defilement". Four were illustrated and one was accompanied by a fanmix.[16]

Round Four

Round Four was a "lightning round" with no signups; writing participants could submit up to up to five drabbles (exactly 100 words, including title, though titles were discouraged), and artists could submit up to five sketches that were each drawn in 20 minutes or less. Works were posted anonymously and voted on, with the winners receiving prizes of "three shiny Assassin's Creed Brotherhood action figures- one Ezio, one Leonardo and one Cesare".[17][18] The due date was October 19, 2011, 11:59 EST.

32 drabbles and 11 sketches were submitted and voted upon. The winning drabble was by Gianni Martelli and the winning sketch by seisei.[19][20]

Round Five

In a return to the format of Round One, artists would submit artwork and writers would claim pieces to base a story on. However, this time there would be a theme: Round Five was to focus on the female characters of the series, with suggestions such as "A glimpse of Rebecca's life outside of being an assassin", "Rosa busting heads and taking names", and "What were Minerva and Juno like when they were still alive?"[21]

The deadline for art was February 6, 2012, but only two submissions were received. The challenge mod posted in several places February 8 asking for suggestions and input to increase participation, but in the end the ACBB was discontinued February 20.
