Description

Set shortly before the Trilogy.

Vincent is blinded in a rock fall. When Catherine's life is threatened, he realizes what his blindness means - he cannot truly protect her any more. The Tunnel community prevents him from going after her anyway, which leaves Catherine on her own. She does escape, but there is a "next time", and no one is going to keep him from going to her, regardless of the consequences for him. [1]

Reactions and Reviews

Vivid, very well written, perceptive novelette set, it seems, sometime shortly before the Trilogy. Blinded in a rockfall, Vincent finds the most severe pain his knowledge he can no longer protect Catherine, threatened by an escaped psychopath whose brother seems bent on romance. The story is less melodramatic, more poignant and loving, than it sounds. Powerful, tender moments between Vincent and Catherine as they attempt to come to terms with Vincent's loss of sight and the effects of that loss on Vincent's sense of self-worth and his relationships with everyone. Father and Joe are very well portrayed here. Thoughtful writing, excellent reading. [2]
