American Dad! is an adult animated series created by Seth McFarlane, the creator of Family Guy. It originally aired on FOX, before transitioning to TBS, where it continues to air to this day.
Canon
The series focuses on the Smith family who reside in Langley Falls, Virginia: conservative CIA agent Stan, his over-protective wife Francine, his nerdy teenage son Steve, and his liberal teenage daughter Hayley. In addition, the Smith's also house a flamboyant, hedonistic alien named Roger in their attic, an own a goldfish, Klaus, who has the brain of an East German athlete.
Unlike its sister show, Family Guy, which primarily utilizes cutaway gags and pop-culture references, American Dad! primarily gets its humor from the quirky personalities of its characters. The show was noticeably more focused on political satire in its early run, especially of right-wing politics, but has notably become less political over time.
